Boxed human skull at the Fontanelle Cemetery (Cimitero delle Fontanelle) in Naples, Campania, Italy. The former charnel house (ossuary) located in a cave in Materdei district was the place where the spontaneous cult of devotion to the remains of unnamed dead developed in Naples. Defenders of the cult paid visits to the unnamed skulls in the ossuary to adopt them and even give the skulls names. Adopted skulls were placed inside the decorated box and became the object of regular praying and votive offering.
