A 1961 view of Vällingby Centrum, the shopping centre of the modern, post-war suburb of Vällingby in the north west of Stockholm, Sweden. The central square often hosts a market. The Stockholm metro runs through the centre. The ‘T’ sign (left) indicates an entrance to the station below the square. As part of a wider plan to decentralise the population of Stockholm, rural land was quickly transformed into the present modern suburb, inaugurated in 1954. Vällingby was the first ABC City (ABC-stad or ‘Arbete–Bostad–Centrum’ or ‘Labour–Housing–Centre’), designed to offer its residents everything they needed locally. The planning and architecture of Vällingby was influenced by ideas from North America and the New Towns of the UK. The original plan for the area was designed by architect Sven Markelius (1889–1972), city planning director in Stockholm, who placed high-rise buildings near the metro stations with houses and green areas beyond. However, the ABC idea failed to completely work as most people had to travel to work elsewhere in the city. Nevertheless, Vällingby remains a popular suburb.
