INotnmgwas saved, the pastor barely escaped withhis life; charitable hands provided himwith necessary clothing in that hour ofneed. Reduced from prosperity to ashes andrendered homeless the congregation foundaccommodation in the Italian church. The(juestion of rebuilding was immediatelytaken up. After the time-honored littlewrangling concomitant with the buildingof a church it was agreed upon to replacethe old church by one of solid Mass for them and the Croatians whomade common cause with the encourage their undertaking PresidentAgassiz granted them the lease of twolots on corner of Oak and Eighth streetsand donated two thousand dollars in cashtowards the building fund. On the 29thof September, 1889, the corner stone tothe new church was laid by Bishop Vertinand by him dedicated to the honor of on the 9th of November of thesame year. The building took in the SAULT STE. MARIE AXD MARQUETTE 2S5 Contract was awarded to Paul R. Roehmfor the sum of forty-six thousand six hun-dred dollars; which meant the buildingunder roof, but without the interior Roehm donated hundred dollarsupon completion of his contract, and Ruppe two hundred dolla
