Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) was a German-born naturalist and scientific illustrator, a descendant of the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family. Merian was one of the first European naturalists to observe insects directly. The illustration shows Manihot esculenta, commonly called cassava, a woody shrub native to South America of the spurge family, Euphorbiaceae with a Snake and Moth Metamorphosis from the artist's "Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium"
