The big Circular Temple - Dacian Fortresses of the Orăștie Mountains - Sarmizegetusa Regia

The big circular temple was very probably dedicated to the most important god of the Dacian pantheon and dominated the entire sacred area of Sarmizegetusa Regia due to its outstanding structure. The moment of its disappearance the temple was systematically destroyed by the Romans symbolically marks the end of the Dacian religion. The perimeter of the big circular temple consisted of a double belt made of andesite, one comprising massive blocks and the second including groups of pilasters. Inside was archaeologically documented the presence of several wooden posts plastered with clay, which supported a wall having four symmetrically placed entrances. In its centre was a room with an apse and oriented according to the solstices, having similar walls and two entrances marked with limestone blocks. The roof had a conical shape. In its close vicinity was built another circular temple, having smaller dimensions, which could not have been reconstructed.
