Kansas is fast becoming an important factor in the production ofoil, and has achieved no small distinction as a producer of naturalgas. The history of the discovery and development of gas and oil inthe State is a long and interesting one, but can only be hinted athere. The following matter on this topic is taken from the workon the Mineral Resources of Kansas, by Prof. Erasmus Haworth,of the State University: In a number of different places in the State, the earlier settlerslearned from the Indians that oil springs existed, were accounted ofwonderful efficacy by the Indians, and they frequently visited themfor the purpose of obtaining material to be used by their medicinemen in their various ceremonies.
