The face of the figureappears to be badly mutilated, but the damage to thefeatures has been done principally by an endeavour to preservethem. A thick coat of plaster had been placed over the faceto protect it from injury, perhaps in the seventeenth centuryor earlier, and this was never completely removed. It had THE INTKRIOR. 87 become gradually polished like the material of the figureitself, and so it remains, with a cut across it, to represent amouth. The remains of the real face arc still hidden S. B. Bo/a /,/ SACRISTY (SEE P. 90). Close to this effigy, but in the aisle farther to the east, andon the north wall, are two admirable memorial tablets whichwere designed in the eighteenth century. One is in memory 88 CHICHESTER CATHEDRAL. of Dean Hayley and his wife (6), and tlie other in memory ofHenry Baker and his wife and their only child (7), who, bycomparison with the other tablet, appears to have been asecond wife of the same Thomas Hayley. Close to the porch in the south aisle is the only completeold brass in the building (8). It is dated 1592, and recordsthe fact that Mr. William Bradbridge was thrice Maior ofthis Cittie, and had vi sonnes & viii daughters.
