Ostwald and Cattell, 1904 World Fair. German physical chemist Wilhelm Ostwald (left, 1853-1933) and US psychologist James McKeen Cattell (right, 1860-1944) at the International Congress of Arts and Science, which took place in St Louis, Missouri, USA, from 19-25 September 1904. The Congress was itself part of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (St Louis World Fair). There were some 2000 attendees and over 500 speakers at the Congress. Ostwald gave an address on the 'Methodology of Science', with Cattell also addressing that session of the Congress. Ostwald (1909 Nobel in Chemistry for his work on catalysis) was one of the founders of modern physical chemistry. Cattell was the first professor of psychology in the USA. Photographed by US photographer Jessie Tarbox Beals (1870-1942).
