The Royal National Institute for Deaf People originally was founded as the National Bureau for Promoting the General Welfare of the Deaf in 1911 by Leo Bernard William Bonn, Lord of the Manor of Newbold Revel) a deaf merchant banker. The philanthropist used the ballroom of his own home, at Bonn House, 22 Upper Brook St.
