Cave paintings. Silhouettes of two people holding up oil lamps to illuminate cave paintings that are about 13,000 years old. The original painters are also thought to have used oil-based lamps. These are part of the Niaux cave paintings in the French Pyrenees. This is the Niaux cave's Salon Noir. The paintings include ibexes (a type of mountain goat, upper centre) and bisons. The paintings were done by Cro-Magnon man, an early European culture of modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens), using black charcoal and manganese. The paintings may have had religious and artistic significance.
