Tufa formations near Mono Lake, Lee Vining, California, USA.
Dawn light illuminates tufa mounds on the north shore of Mono Lake with the eastern Sierra crest and snow-capped peaks from the season's first storm serving as a backdrop. These formations are calcified limestone formed when the lake covered this area years ago. Tufa is formed from underground springs which bring calcium mixed with carbonate which was already on lthe lakebed's floor.
