Stourbridge Lion, first steam locomotive to be operated in the United States. Crowds look on as the Stourbridge Lion completes its first trial trip under steam, in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, on 8th August, 1829. Built by Foster, Rastrick and Company, the Stourbridge Lion acquired its name from the town of Stourbridge, England, where it was manufactured, and from the lion's face painted on the front of the locomotive. It weighed eight tons and many onlookers were convinced the dangerous contraption would never work. The man responsible, Horatio Allen, was forced to take the trial run alone but was cheered on as it rode three miles to Seelyville and returned safely. Artwork was made by Clyde Osmer DeLand in 1916.
