But all these things and many others that are true in regard to Providencefurnish the reasons why she should be distinguished among cities, withoutregard to her size, and her place on the map. This very place on the map, however, gives her advantages over manyother cities which are of incalculable benefit. Sheltered as she is by hernorthern hills from the severe storms of the New England winter, and withthe heat of the summer sun tempered by the prevailing breezes from herbroad bay, she enjoys a climate the year round that is more even and lesssusceptible to violent changes than that of any other large city in NewEngland. It is mild in winter and invigorating and healthful in summerand for manufacturing purposes almost without a rival. The surroundingcountry is rich in natural beauties;
