Dyeing in this apparatus is in general the same as in others, or in open■pans. A considerably smaller amount of water is required than with openpans, and, therefore, some precautions are necessary. The copper wire sieveswhich are covered with well-boiled jute or linen cloth, in order to prevent theso-called copper stains produced by acids, keep the material from moving andbecoming matted. Before dyeing, the woollen yarn or other material is wellscoured and wetted out, and if possible hydro-extracted, so that it absorbs the•dye-liquor evenly.
