Few ornamental plants are more vigorous and free from disease than the dahlia, but like all others dahlias have their failings, and the more fa- miliar we get with them the greater the variety of difficulties we encounter. Fortunately, experience brings also the knowledge how to counteract them. In going over the list of things which interfere with dahlia perfection, I may not bring much knowledge to the ex- pert grower, but I may give some warnings to beginners. Scarcely any of the dahlia diseases have been in- vestigated by scientists, though the occurence of a number are on record in works on plant diseases. I would be pleased to hear of any additional dahlia difficulties, and especially to call up from the old masters of dahlia culture, valuable experiences in controlling or preventing them. The natural requirements of the dah- lia are an open situation with abundant light and air, a constant medium tem- perature and water supply, and an easily drained but water retaining soil of moderate fertility. The horticultur- ist's art may enable us to improve on these, but the beginner will do best to keep as near them as possible. Probably .the worst dahlia disease is a constitutional trouble something like the
