The song and thelampoon were the constant attendants on, and incen-tives in, those incessant political struggles which, duringthe middle ages, were preparing for the formation ofmodern society; and many an old manuscript and sculp-tured block, whether of wood or stone, show that ourforefathers in the middle ages understood well thepermanent force of pictorial satire. But it is more es-pecially in religious matters that the middle ages, likeantiquity, have shown a full perception of the import-ance of appealing through the eye to the hearts ofthe masses.
