In fact, the men of theCinque Ports were a thorn in the side of France, and took to the work ofharrying the French so kindly that the King could not always keep his dogsfrom the game when a close time was proclaimed. On this account, somefive hundred years ago Rye was by no means a jjleasant place of instance, in the year 1377 the French landed in force and plundered thetown—an attention which the men of the Cinque Ports duly returned by harry-ing Western Normandy.
