Apollo 16 Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) on the lunar surface. This consists of equipment carried by astronauts to the moon, set up there and left behind to transmit information back to earth. ALSEP was used on the Apollo 11-17 missions. Seen here are the Passive Seismic Experiment (PSE, foreground), the central station (upper centre), the Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG, upper left) and an anchor flag for the Active Seismic Experiment (ASE, centre right). Apollo 16 was launched on 16 April 1972. Photographed during the first extravehicular activity (EVA) of the mission on 21 April 1972.
