In fact, it is not difficult to see that theyare of a piece with other absurd customs referred to in a pre-vious part of this of Blinders.—Itseems that a nobleman inEngland had a fine horsewith a defective eye, toconceal which he attachedblinders, or ** winkers, asthey called them, to thebridle, so as to partlycover the eyes. Thisfinally led to their use byothers, when it was foundthat the outside surfacewas a good place to puton the crest of rank. During my early publicexperience, when I gayeexhibitions in driving horses without reins, it was notice-able that every motion of the whip, though held directly over the horses back, was promptlyobeyed,—that the horse, in fact, could be controlled quicker andbetter by the simple motions ofthe whip than he could by bitand reins, giving the very bestdemonstration of this singularpower.
