The Ponupo group is the largest shipper of manganese ore in Cuba, from 3000 to (3000 tons a month having been shipped in the spring of 1918,the output being mainly taken by the Bethlehem Steel Co. Notwith-stantling the past large production, there are evidently still availablelarge reserves of low-grade ore that can be concentrated. Botsford Mine.—The Botsford mine is situated about 3 mi. (4 km.)east-northeast of Cristo, and about ^ mi. (1 km.) east of the Ysabelitamine. The workings are at an altitude of about 600 ft. (182 m.) above Jasper and inanganese. In the springof 1918, ore was hauled from here to the Cuba Railroad at Cristo inox-carts and on mule back, over a road that was only in fair shape in thedry season. The Compania Mineral Bonanza, of Santiago de Cuba, operated the property- at the time of visit. Locally the rocks consist of limestone interbedded with fine con-glomerate containing volcanic debris. The dips are variable towardthe southwest. The ore at the Botsford mine is, in part, detrital and, inpart, of the bedded type. The detrital deposit appears to have beenderived from the weathered parts of the bedded deposit. A small faultis shown in one of the open cuts. A fine-grained conglomerate containingvolcanic debris is associated with the manganiferous bed, as exposedin open cuts on the flanks of the limestone capped hill. The detritalore-
