Police officer from the Panama police force outside a cell in the old prison at Isla de Coiba, Pacific coast, Veraguas Province, Republic of Panama, Central America. The prison is now closed. From 1919 to 2004, the penal colony on Isla Coiba was home to the country’s most dangerous criminals as well as home to many who found themselves on the wrong political side. The Coiba Island Prison housed around 3000 inmates and it was about 30 camps spread around the islands. Coiba island is an UNESCO world heritage site and a national park for its unique biodiversity.
