Cilmery, Powys, UK. 14th December 2013. A commemoration service is held at the tiny romantic church of Llanynis where Llyewelyn attended a service days before he met his fate just half a mile away. Welsh patriots get together for the annual commemoration of the assassination of the last true Prince of Wales - Llywelyn ap Gruffudd - who ruled Gwynedd and most of Wales for 36 years from 1246 to 1282 until his treacherous death on 11th December 1282 at the hands of King Edward 1 near the small county town of Builth Wells. Prince Llywelyn ap Gruffydd ruled most of Wales from 1246 to 1282. The exact circumstances of his death are uncertain but chronicles suggest that on the day before his death he was tricked away from his army of some 7000, which he left at Abbey-Cwm-Hir, to keep a rendezvous with someone - a traitor – at Aberedw. Llewelyn was captured and beheaded and his unsuspecting army was annihilated on the land that is now the Builth Wells golf course. Llywelyn was beheaded and his head crowned with ivy and sent to be displayed on the Tower of London. Since 1996, John Davies (John the Rocks) from Llandysul has co-ordinated a weekend every December for a get together where Welsh patriots reflect upon this treacherous day 700 years ago and listen to speeches about regaining Welsh independence. This year the event was organised by renowned Welsh sculptor David Petersen.
