Goddard rocket launch tower. Launch tower forthe 22-foot rocket built by the team led by US rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945). N. T. Ljungquist is on the ground, A. W. Kisk is working on the rocket and C. Mansur is at the top of the tower. Despite receiving little recognition during his lifetime, Goddard is now hailed as a father of modern astronautics. He explored mathematically the feasibility of reaching high altitudes using rocket propulsion, and in 1926 built the first liquid-fuel rocket. His speculations about Moon rockets were ridiculed by his contemporaries, and his achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age. Photographed near Roswell, New Mexico, USA.
