Anaphase I oocyte. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from an ovary, showing an oocyte in the anaphase I stage of meiosis, a form of cell division. Oocytes are a stage in a process called oogenesis, the development of the female sex cell. This starts with mitosis within the female foetus, and then continues through stages of meiosis as the egg cell develops. Mitosis is a division of a cell into identical daughter cells. Meiosis differs in that the genetic information is mixed during division. Magnification: x460 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
