The summit is in the form of a level an altitude of about a thousand feet along its easternand southern scarps the plateau rises towards the north-west, where it blends imperceptibly with the Staked Fig. 13. They are very level, — so level as to pro-duce the peculiar appearance of being uphill in everydirection, — yet they really dip quite gently to the south-east. Along their eastern margin or scarp they are deeplycut by steep-walled valleys, or canyons, which have beenfoi-med by the wearing action of the head waters of theRed, Brazos, and Colorado rivers. In the northwestern RELIEF AND SOILS 25 part of the Panhandle this region attains a height of overfour thousand feet. 30. Region of Mountains and Basins. Between the RioGrande on the one side and the Rio Pecos and theStockton plateau on the other there are two or more linesof mountain elevation. The first includes the Guadalupe
