Lectures on Roman husbandry, delivered before the University of Oxford; comprehending such an account of the system of agriculture, the treatment of domestic animals, the horticulture &c., pursued in ancient times, as may be collected from the Scriptores rei rusticae, the Georgics of Virgil, and other classical authorities, with notices of the plants mentioned in Columella and Virgil; . ng up the sod with a kind of hoe, consisting oftwo unequal pieces joined together at an acuteangle, the shorter piece serving for the handle, the other, which is slightly curved, for turning upthe soil. In another of these sculptures, we have a deli-neation of the second stage in the transmutationof this implement into the plough, in which thebeak of the hoe appears to perform the part ofthe ploughshare, and in which, the handle beingelongated is dragged along by two men. But asthe tendency of the force applied in front wouldbe to draw the share out of the ground, or tocause it merely to graze along its surface, it be-came necessary to apply pressure behind, byattaching a piece of wood to the ploughshare, which was weighed down by the force of twomen leaning upon it. Hence in this operationfour men are seen to be employed, two to dragthe instrument along, and two men to thrustthe point of the ploughshare into the ground.
