Two miles of Rt 12 north of Rodanthe is closed and replaced by a bridge due to erosion and over wash. The road will be removed and returned to nature.

Closed after years of erosion; the constant threat of closures due to ocean wash over; and hundreds of millions spent on repairs on Route 12 north of Rodanthe, NC. A 2-mile stretch of the road has been permanently closed and will be removed to allow the area to go back to it's natural state. Traffic is now routed out over the Pamlico Sound on a newly opened (Summer 2022) mile bridge, nicknamed the Jug Handle Bridge.
