Acute iritis. Close up of a 30 year-old man's left eye with iritis and corneal inflammation. The white of the eye (the sclera) is bloodshot and tears are forming. Iritis is an inflammation of the iris, usually caused by autoimmune disorders. However, it can be caused by infections such as syphilis & tuberculosis. Treatment involves taking corticosteriod drugs to reduce inflammation; atropine is dropped into the eye to block nerve impulses to the iris muscles.
