Harold Clayton Urey (1893-1981), US chemist. Urey was awarded the 1934 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of deuterium, a heavy form (isotope) of hydrogen, and the isolation of heavy water. Urey modified his isotope separation techniques and applied them to uranium as part of the research into the production of an atomic bomb during World War II. After the war Urey studied the chemistry of the solar system and its origins. In the famous 1951 Miller–Urey experiment on the origin of life, he and Miller produced some of the amino acids required for life by replicating conditions in Earth's early atmosphere.
