In Margraten there is an American military cemetery on a hill. In late summer and winter 1944, in South Limburg and during the Ardennes offensive in the Ardennes and in the Ruhr region, thousands of soldiers were killed. A large part of the originally killed American soldiers were repatriated to their country of origin. There are a total of 8301 Americans buried in Margraten. The Wall of the Missing lists the names of 1722 American soldiers missing during World War II. The Dutch government has forever ceded the land to the US out of respect and gratitude.
