Theatre, ancient city of Miletos, Turkey

The ancient city of Miletos was founded by the Greeks around the 11th or 10th century BC, this Ionian city was on the now silted up coast and was previously a port. The Hellenistic period was overturned by the Persians who in turn where overturned by Alexander the Greats armies. The Romans came to dominate the area giving way to the Byzantine period; a castle from this period sits on top of the stadium and is viewed from the road with the flag of Turkey flying over it. One of the best preserved ancient theatres in Western Anatolia it is a magnificent structure with many of the tunnels and exits as well as stairways and seating in a good state of preservation. A fascinating place that simply oozes history!! Close by arethe remains of an Ionic Stoa close to the start of the sacred road. Also the Ilyas Bey mosque dating from the 14th century and currently being restored.
