Being a governess / Nanny could be a lonely life. The terms governess and nanny were interchangeable, though much depended on what degree she was educated. Though sometimes considered part of the family, others were confined to their own room & suffered loneliness due to the rules of their employment. In larger households they were largely resented and rejected by other servants. They were in essence a servant themselves, though some sought to elevate their own positions due to their own social class and background which was often way above that of other servants.
