George Pendray (1901-1987), American author and founder of The American Rocket Society (ARS). ARS was founded on 4th April 1930 by a group of science fiction writers including George Edward Pendray, David Lasser and Laurence Manning, and was originally called the American Interplanetary Society. The members conducted their own rocket experiments in New York and New Jersey and carried out pioneering work in testing the design requirements of liquid-fuelled rockets, which paved the way for the United States space program. The society's name was changed to American Rocket Society on 6th April 1934.
