Built into the south wallis a stone coffin, about six feetin length, two in breadth,and one and a half in was unearthed by JohnShanks towards the end ofAugust 1828, in the placeon which the middle steeplestood. According to report,John was disinclined to be-lieve that King Duncans bodyonly lay-in-state in the old Churchof the Holy Trinity, before being carried to Iona for burial. For froma fifty-year-old newspaper cutting, I read that John used to point to. In this south wall,are two stones witharms. The one has ashield bearing arms(Fig. 38) :—A demi-lion issuant from afess of three barswavy between three stars in chief and a fleur-de-lys in base (Chalmers),impaling, A chevron between two stars in chief and a heart in base(probably for Tares). Initials I. C. and B. T. The inscription is inRoman capitals, the lines being often continued on the bevelled edgeof the stone, viz. :—
