Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge – view from the garden
Sidney Sussex College was founded in 1596 by the Lady Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex as a committed Puritan foundation. This emphasis reflected the compulsion of the age to support the Reformation with highly educated priests. Most of the College’s original buildings have been preserved over the centuries by refurbishment and maintenance. Among its alumni are Oliver Cromwell (whose head is said to be buried in the College) and the theologian William Woolaston and five Nobel Laureates. The picture was drawn by J Greig
