AMARYLLIS, or Knights Star Lily An interesting class of plants desirable for growing in pots, producing showy, lily-shaped flowers, which are very attractive and handsome. The bulbs should be potted in rich sandy loam, with good drainage. The bulb is of vigorous growth and well repays the care required, being almost sure to bloom the first season. If planted outside after spring flowering it makes a good growth and is ready for a second blooming in the fall. They require abundant moisture when growing, but at the season of rest water should be given 235 A. Crinum Kirkii. This magnificent bulb, which often attains the size of 6 to 8 ins., produces flowers of the greatest beauty. Usually two flower stalks of dark purplish color are sent up at the same time, each bearing a large umbel composed cf a dozen or more enormous lily-like flowers, of the greatest beauty and fragrance. The petals are broad and pure white, with a deep reddish purple stripe through the centre. Bulbs, large, 30c. 286 ' A. Johnsonii (Barbadoes Spice Lily), This magnificent bulbous plant throws up an 18-in. spike bearing from 2 to 6 flowers, averaging from 4 to 6 ins, across, of a bright, rich red color, with a white stripe down each petal; it has also a rich spicy fragrance. It is robust, luxuriant, and the earliest Amaryllis; prolific bloomer; easy culture. Price, each, large, 30c.; extra large, 50c. 237 A. Treatea (Fair Lily of the South), a native of Florida. The flowers are pure white, sweet scented, bulbs quite small; 4 or 5 can be grown in a 5 or 6 inch pot. Each, 5c.; per doz., 50c. 238 A. Formosissima (Jacobean Lily), Intense dark crimson flowers, with most charming and graceful appearance. The bulbs are dormant during winter; can be kept like Dahlias. Each, 10c.; per doz., $1. 23
