Chequered Swallowtail (Wings Closed) Papilio demoleus at Stratford Butterfly Farm, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England


CHEQUERED SWALLOWTAIL (Papilio demoleus) A butterfly of the family Papilionidae. It is found from Iran, India and Malaysia, to Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. It can be found in savannahs, fallow lands, gardens, evergreen and semi-evergreen forests and shows a preference for streams and riverbeds. The caterpillar is at first dark brown with white markings, later it becomes green with dark brown markings which affords a good degree of camouflage. It feeds on citrus and plants of the pea family. The butterfly has a wingspan of 8-10cm and has distinctively patterned black and yellow wings with an elongated red eyespot on the inner corner of its hindwing. It has no tail on its hindwing.
