Thepupil is of a pure black, but on lateral illumination presents to view amembrane of silky luster, which not infrequently is thrown into is the lens capsule which was left in the eye when the lens was is, however, only the posterior capsule of the lens (h, Fig. 456) that isintact throughout. The anterior capsule (v Vi) where it occupies the areaof the pupil, is lacerated and in part deficient; the remains of it are applieddirectly to the posterior capsule. Since both capsules are transparent, the pupil appears round and black. Behind the iris the anterior capsule, where it was protected from the instrument used for making the opening,is preserved intact, and in conjunction with the posterior capsule inclosesremains of the lens, which correspond to what was once the equator ofthe latter (Fig. 456, k). As the anterior and posterior capsules becomeagglutinated together in the pupillary area, these remains of the lens are 1000 TEXT-BOOK OF OPHTHALMOLOGY. shut off from the aqueous, and can not therefore be absorbed; in fact, they usually increase in amount, owing to proliferation of the cells of thecapsule. They then form an annular swelling lying behind the iris (Soem-merings crystalline swelling). The lumen of thering, which corresponds to the pupil, is closed by athin, transparent membrane consisting of the twoapposed layers of the capsule. As the opaque andswollen mass behind the iris is completely concealed,it in no way interferes with vision. If the operationhas been made with an iridectomy, the mass is want-ing in the course of the coloboma, because theanterior capsule was opened there likewise. Without glasses the sight of persons who havebeen operated upon for cataract is just sufficient toallow them to go about alone or to do very coarsework. Distinct vision is possible only with the aid ofconvex glasses, since by the removal of the lens therefractive power of the eye has become too small, andhence
