In lateral flexion of the uterus, which is morerare, but not so rare as has been supposed, the bending of theuterus is generally not considerable in degree. FLEXIONS AND VERSIONS OF THE UTERUS. 509 Flexion of the uterus may exist pure and simple. It is also, how-ever, very frequently associated with presence of fibroid growthsin the uterine wall, the kind and degree of the flexion varyingaccording to the position of the tumor. The fundus of the uterusis readily bent a little backwards — as in Fig. 67, which isan example of a rather large uterus affected with retroflexion—or a little forwards, owing to the circumstance that the more fixedpart of the uterus is at about the junction of the body and cervix, leaving the fundus comparatively free to move backAvards andforwards, the degree of this anterior or posterior inclination beinglimited, first, by the natural resistance the healthy firm tissue ofthe uterus offers; and, secondly, but acting much less powerfully, Fig. 68.*. by the broad ligaments and the Fallopian tubes themselves. Howfar the round ligament allows or prevents movement of the fundusbackwards, is a matter of some uncertainty, but supposing it to becapable of active contraction—and it is provided with some mus-cular fibres—it should assist in preventing retroflexion and retro-version. It is obvious, then, that when the body of the uterus is * Fig. 68 represents anteflexion of the uterus in an unmarried patient. 510 PATHOLOGY AND TREATMENT. larger than usual, there will be a greater liability to the deviationforwards or backwards—to anteflexion and version, or retroflexion :as a matter of fact flexion backwards occurs to the most markeddegree. I believe it occurs also more frequently, but it is un-doubtedly true that slight degrees of anteflexion are the flexion takes place backwards it is, however, that weget the most severe
