The Penitentiary with Hospital in background at Port Arthur historic site (former convict settlement) on the Tasman Peninsula in Tasmania, Australia
The Port Arthur penal station was established in 1830 as a timber getting camp, using convict labour to produce sawn logs for government projects. From 1833 until 1853 it was the destination for the hardest of convicted prisoners and repeat offenders from all the Australian colonies.
