His father was Dr. Charles White, and his motherthe daughter of Ezekiel French, one of the early settlers ofSandwich. He studied civil engineering for a year, andwas in the office of J. B. Henck, of Boston, Massachusetts,but gave up this course, and applied himself to medicinein the office of Dr. D. T. Huckins, of Watertown, Massa-chusetts, and graduated from Harvard Medical School inMarch, i860. He entered the naval service as assistantsurgeon in December, 1861, and was ordered for hisfirst duty to the Chelsea Naval Hospital, then underthe charge of Surgeon John L. Fox.
