A pilgrim views the carved marble tombs of seven important saints in a half destroyed shrine of outside of Ghazni Afghanistan October 1 2002. Ghazni has historically been a very sacred place in Islam and there are hundreds of tombs and shrines of important saints or pirs in and outside of the town. Now an important truck stop on the road to Kandahar Ghazni located on the Lora River at the elevation of 2 225 meters is the capital of Ghazni province with a population of 35 900 and is a market for sheep wool camel hair cloth corn and fruit. Named Ghazna in ancient times Ghazni was flourishing by the 7th cent. but reached its peak early in the 11th Century during the reign of Mahmud of Ghazni of the Turkish Ghaznavid dynasty who ruled from Ghazni over an empire encompassing much of Afghanistan Northern India Persia and Central Asia.
