Hans Albrecht Bethe (1906-2005) the German- American physicist who deduced the details of the nuclear mechanisms which power the stars. He was born in Strasbourg on 2 July 1906 and was the son of a university professor. He was educated at Frankfurt and Munich, gaining his PhD in 1928. Following Hitler's rise to power in 1933, Bethe moved to England, then to the USA in 1935. During World War Two he was engaged in the Manhattan Project, the American programme to develop and build the first atomic bomb. Bethe won the Fermi Prize in 1961, and the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1967.
