Dover Caftle was formerly a very principal fortification, begun by Julius Caefar,and finifhed by Claudius. It has many curious marks of antiquity, and the greateftattention that has been paid to it was by Queen Elizabeth, who veiy materially en-larged the place. St. Auguftines Monaftery and Cathedral at Canterbury. i | HE monaftery was founded about the year 605; its walls inclofed about 16 acresof ground. It was vifited by many of our kings upon various occalions, andin 1573 Queen Elizabeth kept her court here with great fplendour, in a royal pro-grefs, and attended divine fervice at the Cathedral every Sunday during her ftay atCanterbury. In this Cathedral were buried the bodies of Henry the Fourth, and hisQueen Joan; thofe of fix other kings; thofe of Edward the Black Prince, and otherprinces, and that of St. Thomas a Becket. It was rebuilt in its prefent preferableftate of magnificence about the year 1420, after undergoing many revolutions by fire,&c. The piciure was taken in the year 1778.
