Previously, Mr. Apple-ton had been in charge at the WalthamBleachery and acted as both agent and treas-urer for a number of years when he firstcame to Lowell. Later Charles A. Babcockand Fred T. Appleton acted as agents. successors were Percival Lowell,Harcourt Amory, Eliot C. Clarke, PhilipStockton, Edward Levering, and SidneyCoolidge. Mr. Coolidge has been treasurersince 1904. His predecessors since served short terms except New Building at St. Louis Branch of Lowell Bleachery General Court of Massachusetts. The orig-inal capital was $25,000, increased fromtime to time, so that it is now $800,000. The founders of the company w^ere Eben-ezer Hobbs, Jr., John Avery, Jonathan Der-by, John Clark, Augustus H. Fiske, and IsaacFiske. John Avery was president from 1835to 1864, Augustus Lowell from 1881 to1896, with the exception of a few monthsin 1882 and 1896, w^hen William S. Dexterand Harrison Gardner acted for him. GeorgeF. Richardson was president from 1900 to1907. Edward Lovering was president inthe four years before Charles P. Curtis, whobecame president in 1911 and served until1920, with the exception of one year whenthe place was filled by Francis J. Moors, thepresent incumbent, who w^as again chosenin the latter year. There were only twotreasurers of the Bleachery for about fiftyyears, from 1835 to 1886. These men wereCh
