A portrait of Victoria Earle Matthews née Ella Victoria Smith (1861 – 1907) was an American activist , author, essayist, social worker, settlement worker, who was born into slavery in Fort Valley, Georgia, later moving to New York City with her family after the emancipation of slaves. She founded the temporary home facility known as the White Rose Industrial Home for Working Class Negro Girls, aka the White Rose Mission
