Tuzla. Bosnia. thermoelectric power plant. The inhabitants of the small village of Bukinje, on the west side of the city of Tuzla, are decimated by cancer and other chronic diseases due to the waste produced by the coal plant. According to Goran Stojak, president of the Bukinje community, in the last 10 years the inhabitants have dropped from 5500 to less than 1000, 10% migrated to other places, the rest died with cancer. Dr. Nurka Pranic, of Tuzla Medical Faculty, says the plant is the cause of 70% of the deaths and chronic diseases in the area.
