Portrait of Dr Steven Peiper, US computer applications engineer. Peiper is seen next to his Computer Aided Plastic Surgery (CAPS) simulator. This uses a three-dimensional scan of the patient's face. The surgeon indicates where the incisions will be placed, and the program calculates how the skin will fit together after healing. The surgeon may try several alternatives before deciding on the final procedure. Peiper designed and developed this system at Dartmouth University, USA. Photographed at his lab in 1993.
