The Cross of Portugal, Silves, Algarve, Portugal


The ‘Cruz de Portugal’ (the Cross of Portugal), is an intricately carved 3m tall Gothic-Manueline cross dating from the 15th or 16th century near the roundabout that leads to the castle at the eastern end of the river front. The limestone cross of unknown origin has the crucifixion on one side and Our Lady of Sorrows on the other side, and the base is dated 1824.
