If, in the light of that experience, there was one whoseadhesion to the British Government in 1776 appears mostreadily accounted for, it would seem to be that of Sir JohnJohnson. His position as an officer in his Kings servicemade it natural to a soldier ; the personal honor of knight-hood from the Kings hand while in London, must haveinfluenced his sympathy, aside from the hereditary sense ofgratitude for the great bounties and trust conferred on his father.
